The Pearl and the surrounding Tobin Hill streets give warm brick, string lights and genuine city texture, and they photograph well into blue hour. The Japanese Tea Garden in Brackenridge Park offers stonework, a waterfall and dense greenery in a compact area — professional sessions there should be arranged with the San Antonio Parks Foundation in advance.

For architecture with weight, Mission San José and Mission Concepción are unmatched, though wedding and quinceañera sessions there require a National Park Service permit and photography inside the churches is not allowed. King William gives you 19th-century porches and oak-lined sidewalks. And thirty minutes north, the ranch land around Boerne and Bulverde delivers open sky and tall grass that looks nothing like the city.

Coordinate rather than match. Two people in identical white shirts and jeans reads as a school portrait; two people in complementary tones of the same family reads as a couple. Cream, sage, rust, denim and charcoal all sit well against San Antonio’s limestone and brick.

Think about the weather honestly. A September session at 7 p.m. is still in the eighties, and heavy fabric shows it within ten minutes. Conversely, a January blue-hour session by the river gets genuinely cold once the sun drops — a coat you like the look of is worth planning.
