Brackenridge Park is the default for a reason — mature oaks, open lawn, free parking and enough room for a group of twenty without anyone else walking through the shot. The Japanese Tea Garden within it is more dramatic but much tighter, and professional sessions there should be scheduled with the San Antonio Parks Foundation ahead of time.

On the north side, Phil Hardberger Park has the land bridge, open meadow and easy parking, which makes it the practical choice for families in Stone Oak and the Medical Center area. Eisenhower Park at the edge of the Hill Country gives cedar and limestone. Further out, Government Canyon offers genuinely wild backdrops for families willing to walk a little.

For something with architecture, the King William district’s porches and oak-lined streets photograph beautifully, and the Missions provide limestone arcades — remember that groups larger than eight, or any session with props and set dressing, may require a National Park Service Special Use Permit.

Schedule around the nap, not around your own convenience. A session at 6:30 p.m. with a toddler who normally goes down at 7 will not go well no matter how good the light is, and it is better to shoot at a slightly worse hour with a rested child.

Feed everyone beforehand and bring a snack that does not stain. The single most reliable predictor of how a family session goes is whether the youngest person present is hungry.

Lower expectations about eye contact. A three-year-old looking directly at the camera and smiling naturally is a lucky frame, not a plan. Sessions with small children are built around interaction — parents playing with them, siblings together — because those images work whether or not anyone is looking at the lens.

Groups above about twelve need a different approach. Everyone needs to arrive at the same time, which in practice means telling people a start time fifteen minutes earlier than the real one. Someone in the family should be nominated to wrangle — a photographer directing twenty-five relatives they have never met is slower than a cousin who can shout.

Physical access is the constraint people forget. If a great-grandmother is coming, the location has to have parking within a short, flat walk and somewhere for her to sit between groupings. That single requirement rules out several otherwise excellent San Antonio spots, and it is worth raising on the first call.

Finally, take the four-generation photograph early and take several. It is the frame most likely to end up printed and framed in multiple houses, and it is the one you cannot recreate later.
