Maternity photographs have a narrow window and a hard deadline, and both of those are worth respecting. Too early and the bump does not read on camera; too late and standing for an hour in the Texas heat stops being reasonable. Thirty to thirty-four weeks is where almost every good maternity session lands.
The deadline is the part people underestimate. Babies arrive early, and a session booked for thirty-six weeks is a session that sometimes does not happen. Booking at thirty weeks with room to move it is the safer plan.
Beyond timing, this is a fairly gentle hour. Sessions are outdoors, in the last of the daylight, at a pace set by how you are feeling. Partners are usually included, older children often are, and the whole thing is over before anyone gets tired.

Most sessions include both parents for part of the hour and the mother alone for the rest. Deciding in advance changes outfit planning and how the time is divided.
Whether older children are coming
Sibling frames are among the most-loved images from these sessions, but children shorten the useful window. If they are coming, they are photographed in the first twenty minutes and then handed off.
How you feel about a flowing gown
Long, light gowns are the visual convention for a reason — they move well, they define the bump and they photograph beautifully at sunset. They are not compulsory. A fitted dress or simple jeans and a plain top works just as well and looks more like you.
Whether the season is working for or against you
A due date in September means a July or August session, which needs an early-evening start and a location with shade. A spring due date is easier in every respect, including wildflowers.
The process
How a maternity session works
1. Book against the due date
The session is scheduled for 30 to 34 weeks, working backwards from your due date. Booking a few weeks earlier than you think you need leaves room to move the date if anything changes.
2. Location chosen for comfort
Shade, short flat walks and nearby parking are the priorities — not the most photogenic clearing half a mile from the car park. San Antonio has plenty of locations that satisfy both.
3. Timing for heat and light
The last ninety minutes before sunset, every time. In July that means starting around 7 p.m., when the temperature has finally started to drop. Midday summer sessions are not offered because they are genuinely uncomfortable.
4. Wardrobe planning
One or two outfits, planned in advance. Fitted or flowing both work; the thing to avoid is anything that hides the shape entirely. Guidance is given for your specific location and season.
5. The session, at your pace
Around an hour, with sitting breaks whenever you want them. Solo portraits, portraits with your partner, sibling frames if children are there, and a set of close detail images.
6. Delivery, before the baby arrives

When is the best time to take maternity photos?
Between 30 and 34 weeks. Before 28 weeks the bump often does not photograph as clearly as it appears in a mirror, particularly for first pregnancies. After about 36 weeks, swelling, fatigue and the real possibility of early labour all start working against you.
Twins and multiples move that window earlier — typically 26 to 30 weeks, because growth and discomfort both arrive sooner. If you are carrying multiples, raise it when booking so the date is set correctly rather than by the standard rule.
Whatever the number, book with a buffer. A session scheduled at 31 weeks can be moved to 33 if you are having a difficult fortnight. A session scheduled at 36 weeks has nowhere to go.
Handling San Antonio heat while pregnant
From June through September, an outdoor session before 7 p.m. is not worth attempting. Even in the last hour before sunset the temperature frequently sits in the nineties, and standing in it while heavily pregnant is unpleasant in a way that shows in photographs.
The practical adjustments are simple. Shoot in the final forty-five minutes of light rather than the full ninety. Pick a location with genuine shade and a short walk from the car. Bring cold water and a hand towel, and plan to change clothes in an air-conditioned car rather than behind a tree.
The better alternative, if your due date allows it, is scheduling for October through April. San Antonio in those months gives soft afternoon light, comfortable temperatures and — in late March and April — actual wildflowers, which is the single most requested maternity backdrop in Texas.
Where to shoot maternity portraits in San Antonio
Open, green and easy to reach is the brief. Phil Hardberger Park on the north side has meadow, tree cover and parking close to everything, which makes it the most practical choice for most families. Brackenridge Park’s oaks give dappled light and short walks. The San Antonio Botanical Garden offers manicured beds and a glasshouse for a session fee.
For open sky and tall grass, the fields out toward Helotes, Bulverde and Boerne deliver the wide golden look that most maternity galleries are built around — and in April, the bluebonnets along the Hill Country roads north of the city are worth planning a session around.
In-home sessions are the alternative worth considering in high summer or late in the third trimester. Natural window light in your own house, no travel, no heat, and a set of images that will mean more in ten years than a park you visited once.
